World Book Night and Complementary World Book Night

World Book Night is on 23rd April. It's a lovely idea, but as Nicola Morgan points out here there is a better, simpler way of promoting books and readership, benefitting authors, publishers and bookshops alike.

She suggests that those who love reading (obviously, that's all of you lot) buy a book to give away to a friend, family member or acquaintance, in the spirit of WBN. Buy a book you've loved yourself, and pass it on to someone you think might love it too. Ideally, buy the book from an independent bookshop, then everyone's a winner.

I'm going to buy my lovely neighbour a copy of Before She Was Mine by Kate Long. Because I think she'd like it. Hope you'll all join in, too!

Now I'm thoroughly confused (easily done!)LOL! Last year's WBN had 25 titles of books to give away in certain designated places - so this year it's just whittled down to ten and these ten titles will be distributed by volunteer book givers? I think that's why I didn't really register this night last year - I knew authors were giving talks and readings (which I thought was great) but as for the actual book giving - it seemed odd there was a list of chosen titles.

I wish there was a World Library Night with the same clout as WBN!

Oh but I like the idea of buying a book and giving it away to some random person on that night!

Take care

This is a lovely idea. I try whenever possible to support any local independent bookshops - we really do need a campaign to raise awareness that unless we use them we WILL LOSE THEM.

Excellent idea. I'm not sure which book I'll choose though and will have to have a good think.

I buy books nearly as often as I buy chocolate, so I'm already doing my bit!

Buying a book to pass on is a great idea. I've read so many good ones lately it'll be hard to choose!
