Submission updates

Oh dear - another week when I've got the alert that the blog post is live before I'd finished writing it! I rather suspect that might happen quite often in the months ahead. Still, my cunning plan of posting stuff whenever I can, and scheduling the post is working. I'll keep on with that in the hope that a scrappy, unfinished post with a bit of info is better than nothing.

Photos are from last week's mini literary crime festival. One of the attendees said he uswd to find the blog useful, but hadn't seen it lately. I assured him it's still going, so hope he's found this post. If so - Hello! It was nice to meet you. Have you started editing that book yet?

Free entry writing competitions

Thanks to Alyson for this short story competition from the Jane Austen society.  The prize is to have your story recorded as an audiobook. It all sounds a bit complicated, so please check the website for more details.

Womag news

With Woman's Weekly we're now to assume a rejection if we've not heard back within 16 weeks, rather than 12 as was previously the case. Stories can still be 'placed on file' for possible use in future. If that happens, it's OK to try them elsewhere and withdraw them fro WW if you get a sale.

The People's Friend have again asked for no formatting at all on submissions - incliding not double line spacing, and no page numbers. This is to save them time and they will now not consider any submissions with any kind of formatting at all. This was announced on Twitter. If, like me, you don't use that platform, you can find the deails in my previous post.

  1. Thanks Patsy and Alyson. I don’t think I’ll be entering the Jane Austen competition. Judging on social media always feels open to those shortlisted getting all their pals to vote for them!
Hope you had a very happy birthday Patsy. What kind of cake(s) did you go for in the end?
We’ve got a house full of cake and hot cross buns left over from family visiting who did eat quite a lot, but also brought home-baked goodies. I’m hoping that eating my way through them will inspire my writing this weekend. Happy Easter everyone!

  2. @ Fiona - Sorry the post wasn't finished when you got to it, Fiona. I've sorted it out now.

The cake was honey and lime, with a cream cheese filling also flavoured with honey and lime. Nobody saw that coming, not even me! It was really good and didn't last long. Gary helped, and has suggested a tweak for next time (as with a lot of his recipe tweaks, it mainly consists of making it bigger).

  3. Pleased the event went well Patsy – loved the ‘crime scene’ tape!
    The cake sounds delicious.
Thank you Alyson, for the competition info. I shall have a go at that one.
I agree Fiona – perhaps inspiration may come whilst eating a hot cross bun, slice of simnel cake, chocolate egg… 😊
    Happy Easter

  4. I'm glad you had a nice birthday Patsy and that the book selling day went well. 16 weeks is a long time to wait from WW. I wonder why it's changed from 12 weeks? You'd think 3 months would give them plenty of time to make up their mind, especially when my TPF stories are rejected in 1 day!

  5. What do you think? Great titles for story submissions? I don’t think I was influenced by your recent posts about Jane Austen, and formatting, Patsy…😊

  6. Love the 'indents and suitability', Dee!
The cake sounds wonderful, Patsy. Glad the book fair went well. Thanks for letting us know about WW - it gives me another four weeks of hope :) although Andrew's file is already bulging with submissions from me he's 'saving'...
