Since my last post, Gary and I have celebrated twenty-five years together (although we've only been married about half of that) and our thousandth night in the mobile writing retreat (campervan). Photos are a random selection of those taken in that time.We marked these occasions with nice dinners, coastal walks, castle visits, lots of tea, plenty of cake... OK, I know that sounds like we just carried on as usual, but we did make it different - honest.
Free entry competition news
The Wergle Flomp 'humor' poetry competition offers a $2,000 first prize, with quite a few cash prizes for runners up and honourable mentions.
For The Scottish Book Trust's 50 word competition this month, your story should include a bat. The image is of the flying kind, so I'm not sure if cricket stories would be OK.
Congratulations on the anniversaries, Patsy. It sounds as if you are enjoying your trip. Still eating tomatoes and apples here. Made an apple cake this morning.

Congratulations on the anniversaries, Patsy.
ReplyDeleteWoman's weekly have a Xmas craft and cookery special mag and they have re-published several stories in it. There's no fee for the writer but they may be able to claim ALCS.
I've heard of a Halloween story sale at BOWW, so I'll seems that April has chosen it very close to publication. I haven't anything else to report. It's been very quiet.
Congratulations to you both on your anniversaries. My PN was published on Thursday so I'm delighted. I need to get myself into gear to get on with some more writing and submitting. Good luck to everyone else on the blog on their writing journey.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Patsy but how on earth do you know its your 1000th night in the camper??? Enjoy enjoy. Well done Elizabeth on your PN publication, another great achievement.
ReplyDeleteAnd as usual thanks for all the updates & info Patsy & Sharon & all.
Thank you Sheelagh
DeleteWell done to all with positive news.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Patsy! Yes, I too am curious about how you tallied up to 1000... maybe a secret notebook in the glove compartment... hiding many many secrets... (another book!) Congratulations, Elizabeth. That must be very rewarding :) I have my second story coming up in BOWW so really pleased with that. I noted in the September edn. a story by Sheelagh and Sharon H, both of this blog, had stories in there. Really not sure how ALCS works with that and also how you, the writer, know (answer: I don't think you do know unless you see it).
ReplyDeleteThank you Marguerite, yes, it's quite a thrill!
Delete@Alyson - we are enjoying it. The tomatoes are all gone now, but there are a few apples left. Probably have them stewed with custard tonight.
ReplyDelete@ Sharon - You're right, people should be able to claim ALCS. A halloween sale in October is very late!
@ Elizabeth, congratulations on the PN.
@ Sheelagh - Gary puts it on his electronic calendar. He's very organised! If we're in an area we've been to before he can look up where we stayed and decide whether to go back or look for an alternative.
@ Marguerite – I wouldn't have a clue, myself. Gary is the organised one. I do keep a notebook though, with how many things we've seen / done in various categories. Eg on this trip so far we've visited 12 castles, 9 gardens and seen 9 lighthouses.
No, I don't think people are officially notified of reprints.
First of, I'm not Sharon h!
ReplyDeleteI know future have an agreement with their writers about claiming ALCS, even though future media take all rights.
I don't know the ins and outs of this agreement, as I don't claim ALCS but I know that it is possible, and it's also possible to claim ALCS with re-printed stories.
I know because several womag writers have done this. As I say, I don't claim ALCS but I'm sure another writer that does will be able to throw more light on this.
Sharon H pops in from time to time, I'm sure. No, Sharon, we know you're not the same :) Thank you for the info on reprinted stories tho' I think it would be quite difficult to keep tabs on unless you buy ALL the magazines ALL the time.
DeleteGlad to hear that you didn't store the 1000th night away info in your head, Patsy, you had me worried there for a moment as I struggle to recall where I was last week.
ReplyDeleteThanks Marguerite , Sharon kindly informed me of that reprint in BOWW otherwise I wouldn't know & yes I added it to ACLS. At least BOWW is only once monthly, I find TPF more difficult now that they no longer publish the names on X or inform the authors directly because they have weeklies, monthlies, specials and annuals (not all of which are readily available here). Thankfully Sharon has kindly offered to let me know when she sees my name there, for which I am truly grateful.
I once had a story re-published in Woman's Weekly, and only found out by chance, as somebody on this blog told me they'd seen it. I contacted Andrew Shaw and requested that he let writers know if their story is to be re-published, so that ALCS can be claimed. However, I suspect that he and other editors are too busy to do this. So, I guess we just have to trust to chance as to whether we find out or not. It was easy to claim ALCS in the normal way once I knew the story had been re-published.
ReplyDeleteWoman's weekly usually do inform writers of re-prints. They're probably the only mag that do. I have readly, so it's easy for me to look for stories in mags, although BOWW isn't on there. As Yours only publish old stock now, all of their stories are re-prints.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your anniversaries, Patsy!
ReplyDeleteI’ve had a permission from Future re ALCS, but I’ve had a couple of stories reprinted in BOWW recently and never thought of claiming ALCS, so that’s interesting to learn. Thank you.
In my own news, I had an acceptance from TPF at the end of the week, which was a great boost.
Congratulations Patsy. Your mobile writing retreat looks very proud to be posing in your photos.
ReplyDeleteI noticed some white cliffs, (yes, I am still playing the guessing game…!) and wondered if it might be Dover, then realised it would have been a long way for you to travel as last week’s photos were taken at Hadrian’s Wall…
Thank you for all the info and congratulations to all with good news.

Sorry, I wasn't concentrating: West Wight along the Tennyson trail, I think and a view of Rowridge mast, maybe from Carisbrooke?
DeleteCongratulations - you've known each other a long time!
