I'll be spending all of today amongst people who have crime on their minds, as I'm a participating author in a crime literary festival in Lee-on-the-Solent.
Free entry writing competitions
Thanks to Alyson for sending me the details of this playwriting competition. We've both had a good look and as far as we can tell it's free to enter. The theme is the climate change. The prize package includes £15,000 and an option to produce yor play at The Globe. You'll need to be UK based and have 'demonstrated a commitment to script-based mediums'.
Thanks to both Fiona and Sharon B for this poetry competition with a £25 book token as the prizes in different categories. The want funny poems, which can either be written, or performed and videod. (Is videod a word? The red line underneath suggests not!)
Womag news
For those of us who don't use Twitter, Alyson and HB have passed on these tweets from The People's Friend - Get writing! We're looking for stories from July onwards for 'People's Friend' weekly, and from September onwards for our Specials. We're always looking for stories for our little annual! And Christmas stories can be accepted from April onwards...
Remember to put all your details on the manuscript. If it's a period story, please put the year it's set. Pay attention to word counts and don't go over.
My news
It's my birthday on Monday. I can't decide what kind of cake to have – what do you suggest?

Happy Birthday for Monday, Patsy. I'd go for lemon drizzle. In fact I might make one and eat some for you!
Alyson
Thanks, Patsy, and I hope you gave a successful day.
Choc 'n' orange chip cake.
Happy Birthday for Monday.
HB
Thank you for all the comp info and submission details. I am not a Twitter/Facebook user, so many thanks Alyson/HB.
You could have a mystery cake in a box, you have to guess what it is (yes or no answers only )– Is it made from vegetables (could be carrot/beetroot). Is there a colour in the name (could be black forest, red velvet, lemon drizzle). If you guess correctly you open the box, if not – well it is your birthday, just open the box and tuck in! 😊
Happy Birthday for Monday.
Dee
Happy birthday for Monday Patsy. I hope you have a good day today.
Thanks for the info but I'll pass on the play opportunity. I wouldn't be able to write about climate change, sorry!
Thanks for the TPF info but I mentioned in the last thread that they rejected a story. I'll try with a Xmas one but I won't be holding my breath.
Well done to all with positive news.
Good luck for today Patsy and a very Happy Birthday for Monday. I suggest a selection of cakes, it is your birthday after all why limit yourself to one flavour:) Thanks for all the comp and submission info. Good luck and happy writing everyone!
Tea & cake with the criminal fraternity sounds interesting. Make mine almond & orange cake please! Have a good one Patsy x
Thank you to all for the opportunities. Christmas: I've started (so I'll finish...)...,. Have a good day today, Patsy. It's worth mentioning here that Radio Victory do a great 'creatives' hour on a Sunday (I listen on catch up) and the crime fest has come up a few times! The programmes are usually on writing in some form or other, including poetry and non-fiction: 'Between the Lines'.
Cake? I would re-define birthDAY to birthWEEK and start with coffee walnut and work my way through. Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday, Patsy - hope it's a great one. I am partial to lemon drizzle, like Alyson, and coffee and walnut, like Marguerite, so please keep me a slice of each, if at all possible. And further to Marguerite's suggestion of a birthWEEK, I had a recent conversation with a call-centre handler who advised me to have a birthMONTH every year, which is what he does! Best wishes with the crime event - it sounds like fun.
@ Alyson – That is so kind and thoughtful of you!
@ HB – I've just got back from the crime festival (it's really close!). It was good fun - and I sold books. I wa especially pleased that a lady asked for the second book in my series as she'd read and enjoyed book 1.
@ Dee – I like that idea. As I'll probably do the baking, I'd need a selection of cakes so Gary could put one in the box for me to guess, but I don't have a problem with that.
@ Sharon – It does seem a difficult subject, especially if the work isn't to be grim or a lecture. I'll be giving it a miss too.
@ Elizabeth – More than one falvour does seem like a good idea.
@ Sheelagh – Almond and Orange does sound good – and Black Forest Gateau and Chocolate Chip have already been mentioned. Perhaps I should eat my way through the alphabet?
@ Marguerite – I might need a week to get through all the cake!
I don't often listen to the radio, and keep forgetting to listen to 'Between the Lines'.
@ Eirin – Both those flavours are very good. I've got some limes to use (I made a Thai curry and couldn't get a single one, only a pack.) Lime drizzle would work, wouldn't it?

@Patsy - Many Happy Returns for tomorrow! Hip, hip hooray. I could have sworn you'd mentioned a few months ago that it was your birthday then. Either it's a ploy for us to keep plying you with cake, or time is passing by faster than Mo Farah. I have some cake recommendations. I'm really impressed with Co-op's Irresistible range. I tried the Bakewell sponge recently and it was mouthwatering - only if you like Almonds though. They also have a Peach Melba cake - that's a new one but it looks delicious. Their cakes are reasonably priced. You can tell that I've done my research and no, I don't work for them. Perhaps I should start writing stories about cakes. Perhaps that's where I'll excel.
Thank you, as always, to Patsy and all contributors, for all the info/comps and info.
Happy writing/celebrating/indulging in cake.
Ally
Happy birthday, Patsy. As for cake, anything with chocolate!
Happy Birthday, Patsy. Any flavour cake goes, especially with a mug of coffee. Just had a piece of Banoffee pie for dessert this afternoon. Delicious. I will e-mail you a slice.
Michael
Happy birthday Patsy
