Free entry writing competitions
This short story competition offers €30 in books. The rules are a bit scant though, and I've no idea what the closing date is.
If you consider yourself working class, you can enter this competition from W&AYB. There's a big bundle of prizes on offer to the winner, including £200 cash. What's especially good about this one is that all entries will receive some feedback for free. If you're eligible then I reckon it's worth having a try just for that.
This competition is for first crime novels and offers a £10,000 advance as the prize. I have a newly completed crime novel, which I'm currently trying to find a publisher for, but sadly I don't think I'll be eligible.

Thanks Patsy, for update, great photo! Good luck with publisher hunt. Maybe sometime you could do a feature on the trials & tribulations associated with publishing a novel. Even if I never write a book always interesting to hear of people's experiences in that sphere. Thanks again.

I do consider myself working class, but trying to explain that, and why the competition label applies to me (in a covering letter) isn't going to be easy, so I won't be entering.
If entrants need to tack on extra material and think about that as well, then I feel it's made doubly difficult.
Personally, I don't think it matters a jot about the social class of writers. To me, it's the quality and standard of the writing that should be judged in a writing competition, and nothing else.

@ Sheelagh – I'll be happy to share my experiences if they might be of interest or use to anyone. I suppose that even knowing what didn't work might help steer people towards what might prove successful.
@ Elizabeth – Thanks. Me too - although I'm guessing patience might be needed whichever way this goes.
@ Sharon – I agree with you that the writer's social class seems unimportant and it's their work which matters. I've nothing against trying to help those who are disadvantaged for some reason, but these days I don't think that class alone is necessarily a disadvantage. Readers aren't only interested in characters from a single background are they?

@ Marguerite – It is interesting to see the range of competitions and I suspect those who can enter those with restrictive requirements, or which seem particularly demanding in some way, will face slightly better odds than the completely open ones.

Thanks patsy - I don’t suppose anyone knows what is happening with yours fiction august edition. Was suppose to put in shops yesterday but can’t find a copy anywhere, I have a story in it. Thanks.
@ anon If you google it, it comes up as being available & gives an outline of what is in it so perhaps its just delayed by a day or two. But you can certainly order it online as of now.
I'm pretty sure it has been published.
