Irish Country magazine have another short story competition. I think / hope there will be one every month. The theme is 'an unlikely friendship' and the prize is a year's subscription plus '
an amazing gift worth €200!' I'm counting on one of you winning, so I can find out exactly what that is!

Btw, I had an email telling me I'd not one the last one, so it seems they do let you know one way or another, rather than leaving you wondering.

As always, feel free to use my photos as writing prompts. If you prefer words to images for that purpose, take a look here.

I thought one of the prizes in the Irish country mag was afternoon tea somewhere in Ireland. That's great if you can get there but for those who live far away it's not very practical.

@ Sharon – Oh yes, you're right about the tea. When I made the post it said a prize worth €200. That's a lot of cake, isn't it?

@ Carol - Thanks. I've put the link back in. It was definitely there when I wrote the post - this sn't the first time one has gone missing!

The current issue of Writing mag has a competitions extra in it.
Some of the comps listed are free to enter, such as the Artist's and writers one, but there's an awful of of USA/ Canada based comps as well.

Lovely 'Best' story, Patsy :) Managed to get another (7th?) shortlist for Writing Magazine but failed with 3 for Write Time, 2 of which had been shortlisted for WM - shows that each comp is looking for different things. I sent off my Gothic 'extremely cold weather' - 'tho frankly I'm looking for hot weather myself :(

Re the afternoon tea debacle, you'd certainly need a lot of cake to justify those prices though in fairness the Westbury Hotel is not just some place in Ireland but is one of, if not the most prestigious hotel in Dublin & the afternoon tea is a champagne afternoon tea ( so if you're into hobnobbing with the great & good this is the place for you) & you could get a Ryanair flight for a few pounds to access it & pick up a good story on route!
On the writing front I've had a couple of acceptance recently from Ireland's Own which I'm happy about because they are on subjects that really interest me. Well done to everyone who has had success, I rarely ever enter competitions but I really must because writing to a deadline is good for me.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be disrespectful about the prize. I'm sure the hotel and afternoon tea is a lovely prize but even if I win it, I won't be flying over to claim it. If I have to pay for a flight, simply in order to claim a prize, then it's not worth it for me.
Well done to everyone with positive news. Sheelagh, was your work to Ireland's own fiction or non fiction? I haven't heard of anyone having an adult story accepted there for long time. I sent them a few Xmas ones but I didn't get anywhere.

Ah no I understand Sharon, I wouldn't fly to London either for afternoon tea no matter how nice it was (well I might if they threw in accommodation!). Tell you what if you win, I'll buy it off you, though I think I'd need a heavy discount, no matter how much cake and champagne they serve. Or better still you come & we'll have a writers get together in the Westbury. I think there would be lots of writing material there!
Yes the writing for Ireland's Own was for historical articles, I haven't submitted fiction there for a while though I did have a Christmas story published now that I think of it.
