Free entry writing competitions
Here's a 'micro fiction' competition. You're allowed up to 1,500 characters to write a story 'related to Africa in some way'. There are three cash prizes, €750 for first - plus the possibility of runners up and special mentions.
The Oxford/42 New Writing Prize is for novels, stage, radio or screen plays. Experimental writing is welcome. You must be 'unagented' to enter. The prize is £1,500 pounds and an agency contract with 42 M&P
The Baen fantasy adventure award is for fantasy stories of up to 8,000 words. First prize is paid publication, $500 of Baen books and an engraved award
Regarding the AI issue mentioned in my last post, there's a petition by the Society of Authors here. It has some 'big' names on it.
Please sign even if you're not directly affected in this particular case, as if this goes unchallenged then it's likely that even more of our work will be stolen.

Thanks for the competitions, Patsy. None for me this week, although the link for the Baen fantasy isn't currently working.
I sent you a link for a poetry comp for Carers. Adding it below for anyone who writes poetry. Unfortunately they don't seem to be running their story comp any longer. I was a runner up a few years ago...

Thanks for the competitions Patsy and the link to sign the petition. Hopefully it will make a difference!
Thanks for all the info Patsy, will definitely sign the petition regardless.
That was Sheelagh (the above anonymous)
Will definitely sign. Thanks for the info and competitions. Not for me though this time.
Thanks for the comps information, Patsy. My target (later this year, too much going on at the moment) is to write longer — currently can't do anywhere near 8000 for a satisfying story (can burble and burble for hours!). I'll definitely be signing the petition. I already sent a feedback for ALCS a while ago.
I've signed the petition, made a small contribution to help promote its visibility and written to my MP, using the SoA template. It cannot be fair that a huge, impossibly wealthy organisation is allowed to steal - and that's what it is - material that is meant to be protected by copyright. Thanks again for airing this on your blog, Patsy.
Many thanks Patsy.
Normally, I'd be interested in entering the Oxford one, but I really don't think my poor effort will be able to impress an amazing judge such as Chris Chibnall.
I don't do experimental writing and when I subbed my drama screenplay to a BBC project last year, I didn't receive a decision, so I assume it's a no.
The huge prize here puts me off entering a piece of work. Other writers will have produced something far better than anything I could come up with.
That's how I feel about entering competitions generally!
My entries don't seem to get anywhere and when they don't, it dents my confidence.
Speaking of comps - does anyone know when the results of TPF poetry comp will be announced?
I've entered it but I don't expect my ditty to be placed anywhere. I'd like to read the winning entries though.
Thanks, Patsy!
Thanks Patsy. Petition signed.
I was shocked (in a good way) when I received my ALCS payment last week. I didn't know if it would come to anything, but I, like a few I think on this blog, submitted several stories/poems to Secret Attic and Fictionette. I went through the lot before the deadline and, because they had an ISSN number... well... let's just leave it that I was shocked. A (good) lesson learned 😃.
Thanks, Patsy - I’ve just signed the petition.
I didn't think you'd be able to claim ALCS from fictionette and secret attic, as both projects have gone under. By the way, I contacted TPF about the results of the poetry comp and apparently, they don't know when these will be announced. Well, that's helpful!
It was chance I did it, Sharon - I felt I couldn't lose anything. As you know, you can only claim over, is it 3 years? Not all Secret Attic had the ISSN.
Ah right. I haven't got a clue about ALCS so I wouldn't know anything about their deadlines, sorry.
Thanks for the info about TPF poetry competition Sharon. I had a go so it's good to know it hasn't been decided yet. Still in with a chance, however slim.
