Thanks to Fiona for sending me the link to this short story competition. As Fiona says, it's one for Dr Who fans. You could possibly get away with watching a few episodes as research, but my guess is that being a regular viewer would be an advantage. There are detailed instructions on the website. You're asked to send a proposal for a 5,000 word story and the prize is to have that commissioned.
Btw, in case you missed seeing the comment last week, Fiona took part in a writing project run by Philip Holyman with Birmingham Uni last autumn. Her poem, True Voyage, Returning, made it into the anthology and a podcast. It’s read by actress Beth Organ in Podcast 10 (1hr 13 minutes in!) you can listen here https://philipholyman.com/true-voyage-is-return
And here's another one from Fiona. This one is for those who live in the Milton Keynes area. They want fiction, factual pieces and poems on the theme of friendship. The prize is to read your piece at a Zoom event, for which you'll get free entry (others pay).
I know it's frustrating to see an interesting competition and not be able to enter because of restrictions such as the area you live – but if you do happen to be eligible, they're a good opportunity. This event is to mark the international day of friendship on 30th July. I imagine there's likely to be more competitions with the same theme.
To show my appreciation, I've included a few flowers for Fiona.

Thanks Patsy & Fiona, always inspirational to know what's out there even if not for me. I've just picked up the metaphorical pen again & am trying to write something longer which involves hopping back & forth. It really is a different skill isn't it?
I echo what Sheelagh has said. Competitions which are niche might just be the right fit — sadly, not this time, but thank you 🙂. And yes, something longer 😩, still on the to do list...
Thanks Patsy. These aren't for me, I'm afraid.
I bet there's lots of Dr who fan fiction out there, so I expect they will be overwhelmed with entries!
Just a mention that Henshaw has a current comp, however it's £6 to enter. 2,000 words max and open theme/ genre. The generous length and the open theme make it tempting to enter. No A1 entries. The CD is June 30th https://www.henshawpress.co.uk/
Thanks for including the website link to the podcast with my poem, Patsy, and for the lovely flowers. It’s warm and a little bit sunny this afternoon so the flowers have reminded me that I should take a cup of tea into the garden and enjoy the beautiful display of irises, plus take some photos of them too.
Thanks Patsy, as always. Can I ask does anyone have details of the Best summer comp? I have looked in the shops and the magazine has sold out. 😩 thanks Charlie
The Best comp is for a Summer romance, max 1200 words. 1st prize is £500, 2 runners up get £200. Closing date is 20th July. Send your entry, with name, address and phone number to bestfiction@hearst.co.uk, with 'Summer romance fiction 2025' in the subject. Hope that helps.
Thanks as always for linking the competitions even if they are not for me this week.
Alyson
Is the Best comp 'all rights taken' please. If so, are all the rights taken from all the entries or just the winner and runners up? Thank you Sue
All rights for winners and runners up only, Sue. Hope this helps.
Thanks Patsy and Fiona. Not for me, but interesting to see.

Thank you so much ☺️
Thanks, Patsy and Fiona. Interesting to know what’s out there, but I’m not a Dr Who fan. A lot of people probably are and good luck to them if they enter.
I had a summer story I was planning to sub to the Best competition. Unfortunately, it isn’t romantic., so it’ll just have to stay in my file for another year.
Michael
Thank you, Patsy, and everyone else for the competition news. I’ve got an idea for a summer romance and at least there’s quite a good length of time until the closing date.
