Free as a bird

Free entry competition news

I think I may have mentioned this short story competition from Croydon Writers before, but as there's still plenty of time to enter and £100 prize, I thought it wouldn't hurt to include it again. Thanks to Fiona for reminding me about it - and thanks for everyone who is on the look out for competitions, news and opportunities to pass on for the blog.

The skua in the photo was on the look out for threats to its nest. We beat a hasty retreat when it seemed to place us in that category! I don't think many of you are that ferocious - are you more more like puffins, oystercathers or fulmars?

Wow Patsy - what timing!
Minutes before reading your blog I’d just updated my ‘work sent’ list to add a short story competition entry about great skuas - called bonxies on Shetland. I was attacked by plenty of them when I spent three weeks on Fair Isle as the volunteer running the bar at the bird observatory (I was 60 and the previous volunteer had been 18!)
An islander told me to hold a long feather above me as they’d attack it, not my head, and it did help, but they appeared from nowhere every time I walked north to get a phone signal.
Now puffins - I watched them for hours and they would toddle right up to me. I definitely want to be more puffin than skua!

Thanks for the competition, Patsy and Fiona.
Lovely puffin photo, Patsy. Such quirky birds.

My latest completed novel is a psychological suspense story set on the tiny Irish island of Inishnabuffen (Puffin Island) and I'm very keen to secure agent representation and publication, so please all send some of your Puffiny good vibes my way!

& if all the above synchronicities aren't enough for you I'm staying on Inisturk off the west coast of Ireland at present enjoying all the bird life including puffins!

Sorry, I should have said - Inishnabuffen is a FICTIONAL island. For real life bird-watching, better to go with Sheelagh's destination!

Aw! How cute! Inishnabuffen sounds a good place for story, Eirin. What a lot of puffins! Not a children's story, then, only, obvious publisher stands out... 😉. I wish you well
'Far and wide' as a theme? Still thinking, Patsy - as you say, plenty of time. Thank you.
