Cows, crime, Chirk, competitions...

Womag news

This post from The People's Friend was seen on Twitter by Alison and HB - thanks both of you.

"Sep 10 We're looking for fiction submissions from mid-January onwards for the weekly, and for late February onwards for the Special. We're also starting to think about Mother's Day and Easter stories."

Free entry writing competitions

There's £2,000 on offer for the winning story in the Tom Gallon Trust award competition - plus further cash prizes. Word count is up to 5,000 words. Entrants must have been previously published and be residents of the UK, Commonwealth or Ireland.

Here's a competition for a detective novella, with a $1,000 prize. (Writing a novella is on my list of things to try.)

Photos are from our visit to Chirk Castle in Wales. We're now back in England, but I'm no better at keeping up with the photography stuff than the writing and blogging stuff! The sun is shining today, so more photos will be taken.

I feel it's a bit like being part of a secret club, being a womag fiction writer, and having an internal life that is six months ahead of everyone else. I cannot be alone in playing Christmas carols surreptitiously in June ... (getting to celebrate Christmas twice a year is no bad thing, for me, as I love it) and now we're thinking about Easter. I'm also catching up with the previous Thursday chat post: When I trained as a newspaper journalist in my twenties, exclamation marks were pretty much banned, but I do use them in fiction, though fairly modestly. And I only have one small notebook - the one in my bag when I'm out and about. For other jottings, I have a tall tower of paper, A4 torn in half to make it A5 (I think) - it's all the backs of first draft material that I have discarded (I print EVERYTHING out). My desk is often a sea of these jottings, but I try not to let it get too out of hand.

What are those flowers? They're gorgeous - almost look like candytuft but don't think they can possibly be! I was thrilled to have my first acceptance for TBOWW to be published later this month. 😊 It was all very quick from start to publication. Thank you for the comps, Patsy, and good luck to everyone submitting and those with good news.

Thank you for the comps info, Patsy.
Congratulations on the acceptance Marguerite. That's wonderful news!
Lovely photos Patsy - could the flowers be Statice?

Well done to all with positive news. I did well at BOWW until this time last year, when April suddenly ghosted me. I haven't heard from her since.
I even asked if the 2 stories she'd accepted but not published, were free now. Of course, there was no reply, so I assumed they were! If I don't receive a response, I guess there's no interest.
I'll sub 2 Xmas stories later but after that, if there's no further contact, I'll be calling it a day there. It's a shame but I don't see why I should waste my time and effort when it's clearly not valued.
As for Easter stories... Well, as it doesn't play a big part in my life, I have difficulty thinking of a story for that time. I can do Xmas and valentine's but that's about it.
