And we're off!

We delayed the start of our trip as long as we could, in the hopes of getting the office sorted before we left home. Unfortunately that wasn't possible, so it will have to wait until we get back. That's not ideal, but it is good to be off on our adventures.

Our first couple of stops were to gardens. I took a great many photos, which I've hardly even looked at yet, so the pictures will be trailing behind us. (If you'd like to see even more pictures from our trip, have a look at the blog on my website.)

Free entry writing competitions

Here's a monthly short story competition. The prize is $100 plus 50% of the subscription revenue from your story. Reprints are accepted – provided of course that you've not given up the rights.

A reminder about the Creative Futures competition. The theme is 'material', the competition is for under represented authors, entries of fiction, poetry and creative non fiction accepted. The prize is publication and '
£25,000 worth of cash and professional development prizes'.

Womag news

Thanks to Suzan Lindsay for the details of the People's Friend poetry competition. They want - "
a poem on the theme of 'reconciliation'. The poem has to have three verses of four lines. The competition closes at noon on 9th May. Email your poem with your name and address to pfeditor@dcthomson.co.uk with 'Poetry Competition' in the subject line. First prize is £150 with three runner-up prizes of £50 plus publication in the magazine."

If you've had a big batch of rejections from TAB, don't panic! Lots of people have (mine are in double figures and some go back to stories I submitted EIGHT years ago!).

From Vivienne Moles

How do you find what publications you might have been in when they have the rights to place them elsewhere? (Something it's useful to know for various reasons, including claiming ALCS.)

I trawled through a few month's worth of Woman's Weeklys, just to see if any of my BOWW had appeared, as happened with Alyson this month. (I did it the long way 😩 and went through individual ones looking at the 'text preview). Then I had an idea: Haha! If you type your name in Pressreader (My library no longer subscribes, so this is as a non-user), preferably in inverted commas because it narrows the field, snippets of your work pop up and you can see where they've come from, and dates. 🙂
I suspect that might be useful for the Woman's Weekly family? Like Australia, NZ, Woman etc...,? You'd have to have someone with more of a repertoire than me to check that out. I work pretty much exclusively on a laptop and think this might not be so easy with an app (Hate apps! 😠 ) on a tablet. It will NOT find publications that are not in Pressreader. I found a variety of bits, including shortlisted from WM, a letter in the TV times from 2019, Best win and letters to WM.

Vivienne adds that at one time Yours didn't attribute stories, so although some show up, they don't all.

Thanks for this, Vivienne. My library also stopped subscribing to Pressreader and I hadn't realised it was still possible to still search for works, so this is potentially very useful.

Thank you Suzan for the poetry details, and thank you Vivienne (writer, and now puzzle solver and detective!😊) for finding and sharing the information re publications and Pressreader.

Many thanks for the info.
Yes, I too, have received a lot of rejects from TAB, some from 6 years ago before we moved house. I'm at a loss to understand it.
The fiction ed at fiction feast hasn't replied to my enquiry, so I've sent TAB a private FB message, asking if there's a new fiction ed or if the mag is going under. I probably won't receive a reply until Monday.
I hope to goodness that the mag isn't going under.
I feel pretty fed up about it and I don't know what to do with the Xmas stories that I've earmarked for FF. There's no point penning any new stories for FF until we find out what's going on.
If anyone can shed any light on it, please let me know.

Thank you for the updates. I’d never thought of checking Pressreader, Vivienne.
By the way, I’ve just read your story on Micromance, Sharon. I loved it!

Many thanks. Woman's weekly put it on file. I waited over 2 years for it to be published, so I withdrew it and tried elsewhere. I'm glad someone wanted it.

Thanks for all the news, plus the tip about Pressreader, Vivienne. Enjoy your travels Patsy!

Enjoy your travels, Patsy. Thanks for the tip about press reader - for those looking you can change the search by clicking on date order which helps get new work to the front. When I had a look at my stories I found the ones in Woman's Weekly but not when they were reprinted in BOWW so they are still a catch them if you can game to me!

Oh, above comments from Alyson!

Thank you, Suzan. Failed with the sonnet for New Writers but did get another for next month with BOWW, so, you win some, you lose some. I'm not sure how we can ever get a conclusive list of BOWW which have emanated elsewhere. It only works for those that are in Pressreader/Readly. Are there any other 'readers' like those?
I too read your story in MM, Sharon: lovely! Also the one in Story Glory: liked the ending!
Wouldn't it be nice if the fairies sorted out your office in your absence, Patsy? Yes... but I know it's not like that! Happy travels.

Many thanks for kind comments. Wel done to all with positive news.
BOWW isn't on readly, so I'm unable to check. If I receive an update on the TAB situation tomorrow, I'll post here.

I also failed with the sonnet Marguerite, congratulations with BOWW. I wondered if you had heard if there will be a Radio Victory competition this year? I haven’t seen anything.
I enjoyed your story Sharon!

Thank you, Dee. I'm a week behind my listening but I'll let you know: nothing yet.

I've also had a bundle of old stories returned/rejected by TABFF, and it's somewhat reassuring to know that I haven't been singled out, so thanks for sharing. I really hope it's just a big spring-clean and nothing more ominous. Patsy, I hope you really enjoy your travels; we're involved in a very protracted house-move, which we naively hoped would be done and dusted by now, when actually there has been zero visible progress since Christmas and we are still in our old place. So I feel your frustration over your office delay. When things eventually move, we should end up with a dedicated study/office for the first time, and I'm really looking forward to that. As I am not getting out and about, I will greatly appreciate your photos.

Thanks to everyone for all the information. Just a quick thought that occurred on the reprint situation. Whenever any of my WW stories have been reprinted in Woman or Woman's Own, Andrew Shaw has let me know in advance. This probably doesn't apply to BOWW though, but I dont know.
Happy travels Patsy.

Thanks Patsy, Suzan & Vivienne for all the updates. Enjoy your travels Patsy & try to shelf the office saga for now (easier said than done I know!) Enjoying the beautiful weather at mo & doing lots of reading & little writing

Commiserations on your protracted office reno, Patsy. We had hold-ups with a bathroom renovation in 2024-25 - it took over 6 months, and our living room looked like a warehouse. Nearly drove me nuts! I hope you enjoy your travels despite all this.

I had an acceptance from Andrew Shaw last week - with a pub date! This was only my second submission (my first has been on his file for 4 years), so I was stoked. Anyway, because of this I was interested in Vivienne's info on Press Reader. So I searched it online. I advise others to do the same and to look at the 'tags'/'categories' beneath the stories if they want some amusement. One of my PF stories, Wednesday Walkers, has been tagged 'Sheffield Wednesday', and my suffragette detective story has been tagged 'BDSM'. Well, I guess there might have been a reference to chaining yourself to railings in it!

I posted earlier, but it disappeared! Has anyone checked the 'tags'/'categories' beneath their stories on PressReader? It's worth looking... My People's Friend stories definitely don't match some of their tags, and have caused much amusement for me!
Hope you enjoy your travels, Patsy, despite the office renovation issues. We had a 6-month bathroom renovation last year that nearly drove us bananas!

@ Dee - Thanks. We're having a good time.

@ Sharon – I don't think it's necessarily cause for alarm (I certainly hope it isn't!) Maybe Alice got notification her inbox was full, and decided to clear it, or something like that?
Two years is more than long enough to wait!

@ Fiona - We're doing just that.

@ Alyson – Good tip re the date.

@ Marguerite – No, I don't know of other ways to check on reprints, except trying to get hold of every magazine ever printed!

@ Dee – I haven't heard about another Radio Victory competition either.

@ Marianne – I'm always happy to share other people's good ideas!

@ HB - We're having fun so far.

@ Eirin – It does help a little to know it's not just us with the rejections, doesn't it?
Good luck with the house move - that's often a far more stressful event than it should be.

@ Sue – It's great when an editor does let us know about reprints (and initial publications). When we know, writers often tell others and buy copies, so keeping us informed helps a little with advertising.

@ Sheelagh – The difficulties are almost forgotten for now. I'm glad you've got the same nice weather.

@ Liz – Trouble with house stuff seems to be far too common.

Yay - well done on the sale!

BDSM in TPF???!!! Do you think AI does the tagging?

Your first comment had gone into spam. No idea why, as even the most obvious spam full of dodgy links often doesn't.

I've heard back from Tammy at Baeur. They are 'carrying out an inbox audit'.
The message was brief but I had the clear impression that there's no new fiction ed and the mag isn't shutting down. Yay!

The next best mag comp is open. Theme of summer romance.
