We're currently away in the van, heading to a family wedding. We've taken the scenic, meandering, circuitous route and met several friends along the way – including Fiona, who often supplies details of competitions and opportunities on this blog, stories for womags and poetry for anthologies, competitions and events.
We've chatted a bit online, but this was the first time in person. We met at Baddesley Clinton. The photo was taken in the library, which had an exhibition about author Lady Georgina Chatterton. She wrote poetry, escapist fiction and travelogues. Fiona and I both liked this quote of hers.
Free to enter writing competition
On the Premises have another mini competition. They want stories of 25 to 50 words, in the form of a list. First prize $35 with other cash prizes.
Womag news
Thanks to Alyson for passing on this message which The People's Friend posted on Twitter. "We're currently looking for stories with a contemporary setting, set from January onwards for the weekly and mid-March onwards for the Special. All word counts welcome but especially 3000 and 2000."

Many thanks Patsy. It looked like a good day.
I've discovered that the local paper, who used to publish my poems in their weekly letters page, hasn't a letters page any more.
Well, I only had 2 poems left to send, so I've done well.
Oh, Sharon. But it sounds like you'd had a number printed, so, good. Thank you, Patsy and Alyson. I will have a serious try for TPF (yeah, whatevah!) as that does seem specific, eh? Patsy, what was the quote? It was lovely for you two to meet. Was their cake? (I can hear Patsy's answer: "There's always cake!")
I was lucky to hear from Crowvus yesterday, wanting to use my memoir piece.
Many thanks Patsy, Alyson & Fiona. Good to meet old friends along the road. Well done Sharon & Marguerite, good news indeed. Don't really know anything about Crowvus other than the name, is it open to people outside UK, do you know?
Thank you Alyson and Patsy. That is a shame Sharon – I always enjoy reading a Letters page.
What a treat Patsy, meeting up with Fiona and visiting Baddesley Clinton.
Congratulations Marguerite! I think the ‘quote’ is in the second photograph, on the bookcase. π
Dee
I've had a long week. π« No kitchen and another week to look forward toπ«. Thank you, Dee. I think I'd only just fallen in. π
https://crowvus.com/author-submissions/ The subs (start again 1st October) are varied and I'm sure, open to all, Sheelagh.
Thanks Marguerite
Went to Baddesley Clinton for the first time last year. Lovely house and the priest holes gave me a plot twist for a story I sold to My Weekly last month! Glad you and Fiona got to meet, Patsy.
@Sharon - I wonder if the letters page has been cut because people are using AI to write letters? It's a thought...
Alyson
Hi everyone, yes, it was great meeting Patsy - and where better than in a room full of books! We had a lovely morning at Baddesley Clinton. Lots of chat, no cake, but there was chocolate!
Glad the setting inspired your plot twist Alyson. The place is so full of character, we spot something new every visit.
Congratulations to everyone with positive news and thanks Patsy and Alyson.
Well done to all with good news, especially your memoir piece Marguerite. Good to hear that Crowvus are responding. Hopefully might hear something on my novel submission soonish. Not hopeful really but some feedback of whatever kind would be very useful.
Sue, you have a story in this week's woman mag. Well done.
Thank you, Sue, and others for your good wishes. I was particularly chuffed as it was a special piece for me. I was hoping some others on here might be joining me... Hope the novel submission comes to something :) (oh, and congrats on the Woman publication!)
Off on your travels, Patsy! If you ever head for Exmoor, please let me know. I've 'known' you for the better part of 20 years (as 'Tosh' at first!) and I'd love to meet you in person. I greatly admire your persistence and determination cos mine have long deserted me on the writing front! Has anyone mentioned 'Discoveries' competition for female writers, recently opened for this year? Your followers might like to look it up and maybe enter? It's for the first 10,000 words of a novel that doesn't have to be finished. AND it's free to enter ... Good luck anyone having a bash. I might even myself.
Erm... may I just point out something. Titles are a pain in the rear! I think you are talking about Georgiana, Lady Chatterton as opposed to 'Lady Georgina Chatterton'.
Thank you Marguerite and Sharon for mentioning my story in this week's Woman. Its a reprint from Woman's Weekly but always good to have one out there.
@ Sharon, It was a good day. An interesting place to visit, and of course it was nice to meet Fiona (and her husband) for real.
That's a shame about your paper, but I'm glad you got some poems published there before it was too late.
@ Marguerite - the quote I meant was the words sown on the library shelves. I can do without the slumbering and dust, but I do love knowing my books are on the shelves of a few libraries.
Congratulations re Crowvus. That's great news.
No, no cake. Despite rumours to the contrary, I can go hours without the stuff! (And we'd only just had a late breakfast.)
@ Sheelagh – Yes, it's good to meet friends on our travels. It's a shame our trip to Ireland was delayed - hopefully we'll be doing that in the spring.
@ Dee - The letters page is a big part of what makes a local paper truly local, isn't it?
Yes, you're right about the quote.
@ Alyson – Old buildings like that are full of potential story ideas, aren't they? I didn't make up a plot while I was there, but it's entirely possible a detail will creep into a story at some point.
@ Sharon – I think you're right. That stuff isn't what people want from their local paper. They want stuff that's genuinely local, and they can't get from the nationals. The publishers are doing what's cheapest and easiest.
@ Fiona - That chocolate is now very much in the past tense! I'd never had dark chocolate buttons before (I didn't even know they were a thing). I'm a convert!
@ Sue - Good luck for the novel and congrats on the reprinted story.
@ Celia. Long time no type! It would be great to meet if we come down your way.
I either mentioned that competition, or a similar sounding one. I'll look it up as it sounds good and a reminder wouldn't hurt.
Ah, you can tell I don't do a lot of hobnobbing with the gentry, can't you?
