Over To You

Do you have any womag news?

Are you researching, writing, subbing? Had any acceptances or rejections? Any other news?

Do you know which author used this desk? Feel free to use the as a picture prompt. If you'd like other writing prompts, short exercises and story/scene suggestions then you might find this book useful.

I'd love to hear your competition news.

Have you entered any writing comps? Had any luck? Heard about interesting contests? Got any tips to pass on? (Although I only feature free to enter competitions in my posts it's fine to share news about other competitions too.)

Do you have writing tips to share, questions to ask, or suggestions for this blog?

Hello Patsy, three free entry comps with cash prizes at https://erewashwriterscompetition.weebly.com/ currently inviting entries.

We also have the annual Open Short Story Competition entry £3 inviting entries. This competition is non-profit making and we recently gave cash we had left over from our last competition, to Hedgepigs in Beeston, Notts and bought food for Bramcote Animal Rescue, Notts.

The annual competition is being judged by Helen Baggott.

Best wishes,
Debbie

That looks like Thomas Hardy's writing desk to me.

I'm about to enter the Best competition you blogged about last week, thank you, Patsy.

Hi Patsy! I'm absolutely stoked to have received four acceptances from The People's Friend since your last Over To You. I had a story published in the Friend a couple of weeks ago and was also their Writer of the Week, which was very exciting. All this has helped break the gloom of Melbourne's hard lockdown. :)

I am still waiting to hear from Yours Fiction about the three stories I sent earlier this year. Recently sent a story to TPF, and am working on another.

Still taking in entries to the IWSG Anthology Contest. Less than two weeks to go. And we've been hopping as many have waited until the end to enter.

Thomas Hardy's desk at Max Gate, isn't it? I visited some years ago with a group of writer friends. Lovely place
I'm developing a story idea for that ghost story comp you shared, just submitted to an anthology being organised by a writer friend and have just had the first part of a five part serial okayed by the team at the People's Friend. Trying to write a novel at the same time. It's a juggle but fun

Hi, Patsy. This is my first comment to your blog, but I have been reading it for a while and appreciate the lengths you go to to keep us writers informed on what’s going on on Womagland. I’ve just had my second story, The Trouble With Evelyn, published in Yours Fiction Special. I also have two more stories with them which I’m hoping to hear about. I’m also considering subbing something to TPF at some point.

@ Debbie – thanks, I'll put it in the next post.

@ Alyson – You're right, it is TH's desk.

@ Liz – That's brilliant! Well done.

@ Julie – Frustratingly, unlike Yours, the editor at Yours Fiction doesn't seem to reply unless it's an acceptance. I wish that at the least she'd give a cut off point after which we knew stories wouldn't be used.

@ Alex – I'll mention it in my next post. There will still be a few days to go.

@ Lynn – That'll keep you busy! Congratulations for the serial instalment.

@ New Girl – I know the feeling!

@ Michael – Congratulations on the acceptance.

Hi, Just wondering if anyone else has had their payments for TAB stories downgraded? I recently declined to sign the contract giving up all rights, but still had a fey stories to be published and paid for. One went in the Aril Bumper Spring Special - I usually get £300 for a story in there - I got 225 this time, I've just had a 3page story in TAB Fiction Special - I useualy get £275 for a 3 page story, I got £200 this time. Has this been happening to others - I know you've had a few in recent times Patsy. I don't remember anyone telling us we'd be getting paid less for stories. Have I missed something? Any advice appreciated. Good wishes Kate Hogan

@ Chris – Good luck with the stories which are still outstanding. Replies do seem to be taking longer than usual, but TPF will definitely reply eventually. I'm less certain about Yours, as there system seems rather complex with plenty of scope for submissions or replies to go astray.

@ Kate – I haven't seen any official notification, but I believe you're correct and as well as taking more rights, TAB have dropped their pay rates. I feel it would be better if they either had a standard rate for all stories, or stated what they'd pay at the time of acceptance. Asking people to agree to a sale for an unknown fee doesn't seem fair.

Hello Patsy, and as ever, thanks for keeping us up to date with your blog. Congratulations to all those authors with acceptances, especially new ones :-)

Looking at that desk picture, I'd perhaps suggest a piece on what everyone finds comfortable as a writing seat.

Myself, I'm still looking for the ultimate cushion!! What do other writers recommend?

Kate, I'd query your payment for the three pager. I had a purchase order through yesterday for a one and a two pager and the rates were the same as they've been for the past few years, so something seems amiss.

Hi Shane - good of you to come back with some advice. I wasn't sure if I'd missed some information regarding reduced rates, though I know they reduced them a couple of years ago. I've emailed accounts so 'fingers crossed' I'll hopefully get a response and a few more quid! Very grateful for your input. Good wishes, Kate.
